Gentrification and Toronto

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/02/02/kensington_market_loblaws_beyond_a_debate_over_gentrification.html

As I finished up the final book for the course, I began thinking about how our own city has changed in a number of ways. One of the things that came to mind was the possible idea of bringing a Loblaws to Kensington market. I think this shows how even Toronto is becoming gentrified.

interesting article, Stephanie, particularly in how it challenges our ideas of gentrification by pointing out how Kensington has been slowly gentrifying in recent years with the addition of businesses such as Sanagan's, but what really has people up in arms is the possible introduction of a Loblaws. Is Sanagan's an example of gentrification? Is it more acceptable because it's an independent business rather than a corporate empire? What is the "wrong" kind of gentrification? Also interesting is the reference to the "phony homage" of the Queen St Loblaws - links back to our discussion of the Bohemian Embassy on Queen, which also tried to appropriate a particular Queen West identity!
